LUDWIK KAROL ASSMAN




He was an air gunner, born 9th October 1915 at Nupajedel, Czechoslovakia. He was commissioned on 30th September 1941.  On 26th October 1941, W5720 was hit by flak and crashed into the sea.  After 17 or 18 hours in the water, all but one of the crew was rescued; this flier survived the crash but F/O Stenocki was killed.  P/O Assman was later killed in the crash of X9764 on 6th April 1942 near Geetbetz, Belgium which was shot down by a night fighter.  Luftwaffe records show that it was shot down by Oberleutnant Heinrich Petersen and Fw Leidenbach of 6/NJG1 Geetbetz 10 KM North West St. Trond at 02.28hrs.  Buried at Heverlee War Cemetery, Leuven. 

He was awarded the Krzyz Walechznych (Cross of Valour) by Air Vice Marshal Ujejski on 21st November 1941.
